Dresser Makeover in Cream and Wood

(I love this photo!)

This incredible dresser came to me as a custom order from a new client.
It was a great quality dresser, with dove tailed drawers...
But the finish needed help and there were some handles missing.
I was told to use creamy white somehow, but I was free to do with it what I wanted....
Woo-Hoo!! ......and ...... (yikes!)

After toying with different possibilities, I decided to go with my first gut feeling,
Paint the bottom in "warm scones" and stain the top in dark walnut.

We filled the original holes and added oil-rubbed bronze cup pulls and knobs.

I'm very pleased with the final outcome! I wish it was mine...:)

What do you all think???

  1. Yep, love that lens flare in the first photo. And I wish that dresser was mine too. Maybe I can use it as inspiration for what to do with the set I have. I like the look a lot!

  2. This turned out beautiful. It would look good on the set Nic has. I've always liked the style of the set but not the blond wood.

  5. What a great makeover! Our bedroom dresser and night tables are in line for a makeover (I have other projects to finish first) and I am torn between painting them black or white. Your lovely makeover is helping me sway to white. I'm stopping by from MMS Furniture Feature Friday. I'm going to check out more of your blog.

    1. Thank you Maryann! That's awesome! I tried tonight to add one of your buttons but it wouldn't work... (I'm fairly new at this, can you tell?) but I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks again!

  7. All of your stuff is beautiful. I am just starting to get into restoring furniture, and I have stumbled on your blog. I love all of your work. Is there any other blogs you could recommend to me for inspiration and for how to do some of the techniques?

    Thanks!

  8. Danielle, I really love this piece!!! I have a question for you....do you strip the tops of the veneer using stripper or do you sand them? If you sand them, what kind of sander are you using? I've been doing a lot of pieces like this and go back and forth between sanding and stripping. Really do not like the stripping process. Let me know your thoughts. I'm following you now too :-)

    1. Melody, Thank you! Stripping is NOT my favorite thing to do either, so I sand most of the pieces I do. I use a dewalt heavy duty 5" random orbital palm sander. I usually go back and forth between 80 and 220 grit sand paper, using the 220 when I want a nice smooth finish like the top of this dresser. It's probably not as smooth as it could be, but I really like the result... Veneer is just tricky (I'm sure you know,) because you can sand TOO far, and I hate when that happens! But I still prefer it over stripping. :)
